A True Southwestern Treasure
$12,900,000
Rolling across 175 acres of quintessentially Southwestern ranchland — a seemingly infinite tableau of brown earth, piñon, and juniper — Rancho Alegre is a magnificent residential property destined to be known as a Santa Fe landmark. Designed by renowned architect William F. Tull and featured in the June 2008 issue of Architectural Digest, the impressive pueblo-style residence is nestled near the crest of a hill with panoramic views of the Ortiz and Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The residence features a 13,000 square-foot main house; central plaza courtyard; santuario; torreon with rooftop deck; guest and caretaker’s quarters; carriage house; and expansive rear patio with entertaining portal, infinity-edge pool, hot tub, and cabana. Not far off lie a private four-bedroom guesthouse and equestrian facilities that include twelve casita-style horse stalls and a large riding arena.

Located on its own private end of the residence, the master suite derives its inspiration from Chaco Canyon, a historic ruin in western New Mexico which once served as the social and economic center of Anasazi culture. An archaeologist’s pictures were used to ensure authentic replication of the impressive stonework and wood ceiling treatments found at the site. The suite is comprised of a modest bedroom with a private portal; a generous dressing area with his-and-her matching walk-in closets, washrooms, and water closets; a spectacular one-of-a-kind Anasazi shower room; a steam shower; and an exercise room. Custom double wood doors open from the west hallway to the master bedroom, nestled behind a stacked-Anasazi-stone privacy wall. Replicating the buildings found in Chaco Canyon, the ceiling features a system of double-vigas and latillas cut from standing dead trees. A wall of variously sized nichos provides options for storage of books, art, and collectibles, and conceals a media cabinet behind custom wood doors. A wood-burning kiva fireplace with flagstone banco provides warmth and romance. Double-glass copper-clad doors reveal breathtaking views of the Ortiz Mountains and open to a private portal. For the owner’s convenience, the portal leads immediately to the hot tub and infinity pool on the rear patio.

On either side of the corridor that leads from the master bedroom to the Chaco Shower, and beneath a striking circular skylight accented by wooden beams, are entrances to the oversized his-and-her matching walk-in closets. Each closet features custom cabinetry that includes rough-hewn cedar shelves, cabinets, nooks, and drawers of various sizes. Generous space, strategically placed spot lighting, and a large full-length mirror make these closets a dream come true. Four glass-front jewelry cases of sand-blasted sandstone flank the entrances to the closets.
